Sony unveils Xperia M mid-range Android smartphone

Sony has officially announced the Xperia M, the latest member of its ever-growing family of Android-powered smartphones.
The electronics giant raised the curtain on the handset today as it looks to maintain its momentum from the success of the Xperia Z that launched earlier this year and has sold some five million units to date.
Unlike the Xperia Z model, however, the Xperia M is very much a mid-range effort, rocking a modest but respectable spec sheet that includes a four-inch FWVGA display (854 x 840px), a 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Plus processor with 1GB of RAM and a five-megapixel camera with an Exmor RS sensor and dedicated shutter release.
The 0.3-megapixel front-cam is not quite as exciting, however. Nor is the pretty sparing internal storage of 4GB. Fortunately, a microSD slot is included to expand that further.
These nitpickings aside, the Xperia M is packed with extras, including Sony’s signature audio smarts: ClearAudio+, xLOUD and 3D Surround Sound (VPT).
There’s Near Field Communication (NFC) technology too, which comes with one-touch support for fast pairing with NFC-enabled televisions and accessories.
Elsewhere you’ll find Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0, plus screen mirroring support to display your phone’s content on a compatible TV or to share music and photos between devices.
All these and more are crammed into Sony’s trademark ‘OmniBalance’ design that debuted with the Xperia Z, and even features a colour-changing LED that you can personalise to notify you of incoming calls, messages and alerts.
Available in black, white and purple, the Xperia M will come in a standard single SIM version and a dual SIM model that’s presumably intended for the international market.
A yellow colour variant will also be available for the single SIM version.

“Consumers looking for their first steps into the world of Xperia smartphones, would be well-advised to look at Xperia M or Xperia M dual,” said Calum MacDougall, Director of Xperia Marketing at Sony Mobile Communications.
“Both models benefit from Sony’s proven innovation and engineering expertise, and are perfect for those who want the premium technology and experiences often only associated with high-end models.”
Both variants of the Sony Xperia M will be available worldwide from the third quarter. Pricing is still to be confirmed, but as soon as we find out, we’ll be sure to let you know.
